Ms. Macintosh co-founded The Performance Group and played in their productions of Makbeth, Seneca’s Oedipus, Mother Courage and her Children, as well as Commune, Dionysus in 69 and The Tooth of Crime for which she won OBIES. Broadway: Orpheus Descending; The Seagull, National Actor's Theatre; Our Town, Abe Lincoln in Illinois, both for Lincoln Center Theater. New York Shakespeare Festival: The Bacchae,; Father Comes Home from the Wars, Pts 1, 8, & 9; 365 Days/365 Plays; Macbeth; All's Well that Ends Well; Julius Caesar; Cymbeline; A Bright Room Called Day; Three Acts of Recognition; Dispatches; and Alice in Concert. New York Theatre Workshop:The Misanthrope, Alice in Bed, More Stately Mansions, Streetcar Named Desire (assistant director,) all with Ivo Van Hove: winning an OBIE for Sustained Excellence of Performance, Drama League Award for Distinguished Performance and the Edinburgh Festival Herald Angel Award for Distinguished Performance, for More Stately Mansions. Joan won the Drama Desk Award for her solitary performance in Request Concert at The Women's Interart Theatre in NY; and the 2007 Eliot Norton Award for her work in Britannicus, at Harvard's A.R.T. She also collaborated with Mr. Woodruff on Edward Bond's Chair, at TFANA in New York.
